I am a Process Safety Engineer currently working for Nova Chemicals at the Manufacturing East location. I obtained my Masters of Applied Science degree from Ryerson University in 2012 under the supervision of Dr. Yaser Dahman. During my 2 years of research work under Dr. Dahman, I invested my time in learning about and experimenting with green energy specifically derived from lignocellulosic substrates. My research project involved Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation of wheat straw using novel Clostridium strains to produce biofuels such as butanol and ethanol. The work involved a lot of problem solving, creativity, hardwork and discipline. The most important part for me was the hands-on experience that I was able to get in setting up experiments, troubleshooting process issues and collecting results. This experience helped me immensely while working in the the plant environment at my previous and current job. I also had the opportunity to present my research in front of peers and colleagues which helped me advance my communication skills. This experience was extremely helpful at work where I facilitated Process Safety meetings for different companies. I had access to all resources at the Chemical Engineering Department including help from the technologists which I frequently visited to troubleshoot problems with equipment for my experiments. Dr. Dahman and other professors in the department were always available to answer my questions and motivated me throughout my program. My time at the Department of Chemical Engineering was a great learning experience which will help me throughout my career wherever I go.
High School Exchange Student: Toluwanimi Olubode
I am a Gr.11 high school student at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School and have just completed a semester long Biotechnology course at my school, part of which involved the completion of a research project for the Sanofi Biogeneius Challenge Canada. I was brought to Ryerson University in preparation for competition. While at the university, I completed my research project titled “USING WHEAT STRAW HYDROLYSATE AS A POTENTIAL COST EFFECTIVE FEEDSTOCK FOR GREEN BIOCELLULOSE NANOFIBRES PRODUCTION”. In this project I isolated a cost effective feedstock option for the production of bacterial cellulose at a cheaper price. This project was completed under the expert mentorship of Dr. Yaser Dahman at the Centre for Green Research Technology. My experience while there was exemplary. The access to information and resources to successfully carry out my project was unprecedented. It was definitely a lot of work but not anything Dr.Dahman did not make available the necessary tools to complete. I learned a vast and immeasurable amount of information about the field, research practices and future application, something I am always grateful for. I am most thankful for the trust and belief that the university and Dr. Dahman placed in me to see this project to completion.

For sure working with someone who has a large experience in the fermentation field was something remarkable. I was able to improve the skills such as coding, communication, solving problems, creativity and also realized that I do want to work with fermentation in my professional life.
